Do
you want your blog or podcast to show up on your business or personal
website?
What
is Syndication?
This process
whereby information from one website shows up on another website
is called "syndication". It works like
newspaper or television syndication. Someone creates one article
or one program, but it shows up in other newspapers or on other
cable channels.
Look at the bottom
of this page. You will see several syndicated RSS feeds (podcasts/blogs).
In other words, you are reading text that is actually on another
website, but is "pulling through" to this website.
Why
would you want to syndicate content onto your website?
Syndicating your
own content (and sometimes other people's content) helps you achieve
higher search engine rankings. Let me explain how search engines
"rank" a website.
Search
engine robots visit your site the first time and read the content
to see what your site is all about, and to see if there is new content.
- Normally,
your site has a name, description, special tags and topics. The
Search Engine robots look to see if your content matches the topic
of your website name and the first paragraph of your website.
- The robot
visits you a second time, and looks to see if you have any NEW
content on your site. If there is nothing new, it doesn't come
back for a while. When it does come back again, it looks for new
content AGAIN. No new content? Then it won't come back for a longer
while.
- Your rankings
go up when robots return and "crawl" (or read) the content
on your site. If you don't have new content for it to read, it
stops visiting, and you go down the search engine rankings as
other websites with newer content move up.
- So in this
case, it doesn't matter if you are syndicating your own content
or someone else's. Syndicating content allows you to have more
"dynamic" (changing) content on your site that matches
the topic of your website, instead of only "static"
(unchanging) content. Therefore, the robots will come back more
often and move you up the search engine rankings.
Search
Engines look for inbound links from other reputable, topic-related
websites to your website(s).
- If you put
links to your website in your blog or podcast text, then when
the search engine robots read that link in your blog, they will
VISIT your website. Remember that your search engine ranking depends
on how often the robots visit your site.
- The opposite
is also true - when the robots visit your website and find a link
back to your blog, they will visit your blog.
- Either way,
the search engine robots will be visiting your websites.
How
can you syndicate content
onto your website?
If you are somewhat
technical, and know how to put files on your website, and change

as well.
